Monticello Man arrested for stealing a motor vehicle

Monticello police arrested Montrell A. Williams, age 31, of Monticello on Sunday 1/14/18. Williams was charged with felonies for grand larceny in the 3rd degree and criminal possession of a stolen property in the 3rd degree. He was also issued a traffic summons for failure to comply with a police officer.

At 8:15 AM Sunday Monticello police responded to the Mobil convenience store located on Forestburg Road in the Village of Monticello for a report of a stolen 2015 Jeep Compass motor vehicle. The vehicle operator had stopped at the convenience store to get a cup of coffee and had left the vehicle running and unattended outside the store. While inside the store, an employee alerted the vehicle operator that his vehicle was being stolen. The vehicle operator ran outside and observed his vehicle traveling southerly on forestburg road and then left turned onto Breakey Avenue. Monticello police were then alerted of the theft of the vehicle.

Ten minutes later at 8:25 AM, Monticello police officer Tyrus Walker observed the stolen vehicle near the intersection of Forestburg Road and Evergreen Drive. PO walker attempted to stop the vehicle but the driver failed to comply. Monticello officers then conducted a felony stop of the stolen vehicle on Broadway and the driver, later identified as Williams was arrested. Officers reviewed surveillance footage from the Mobil Station which showed Williams stealing the vehicle. Williams was arraigned before acting Village of Monticello Justice Leo Glass and remanded to the Sullivan County Jail on $15,000.00 bail; pending further court action.
