DPW Update

The Town of Rockland has requested assistance from the Sullivan County Division of Public Works (DPW) for demolishing a building located at 16 Meadow Street in Livingston Manor.

The town acquired the site but doesn't possess an excavator to take down the building themselves.

“We have taken down buildings for them before and they haul the materials away,” said DPW Commissioner Edward McAndrew.

Officials in the Town of Rockland would be responsible for any environmental issues, such as clearing the building of materials before its demolished.

McAndrew went on to say that DPW is nearly done with its paving projects for the year. There are about five miles left of paving to be done on County Road 179 between Livingston Manor and Roscoe.

County Roads 151 and 152 between Livingston Manor and heading out toward Lew Beach have been repaved.

Bridge 98 in Briscoe is now open to traffic. Bridge 131 along the Toronto Reservoir is being sliplined to repair an underground pipe without having to tear up the road itself.

Maintenance and upkeep on the County Government Center is ongoing. A crew of DPW employees were pressure washing the exterior of the building last week. Two new boilers have been installed in the Government Center and are now functional.

Recycling brings in cash

There were 469.49 tons of recycled materials produced in the month of September, generating $9,766 for the county, according to Recycling Coordinator Bill Cutler.

Cutler's department recently hosted breakfast recycling presentation for the Sullivan County Chamber of Commerce. “The Chamber has agreed to distribute all of our recycling handouts and fliers electronically to local businesses here in the county, so we hope that will get the word out a little bit more,” Cutler said.

A recycling presentation was also made to the Liberty Rotary Club.
