Fire damages Thompson's highway building

THOMPSON — At approximately 8:45 a.m. on September 17, the Town of Thompson highway facility building on Jefferson Street in Monticello caught on fire.

According to Thompson Town Supervisor Bill Reiber Jr., the fire was on the front right corner of the building, and it was heavily damaged.

The cause of the fire was accidental, according to Rieber.

The building is used by the highway department to make road and streets signs for the town and was previously the town hall for Thompson.

“There were no injuries to any personnel or firefighters and limited damage to equipment,” said Rieber.

Monticello Fire Department responded swiftly, according to Thompson Highway Superintendent Richard Benjamin, Jr.

According to Benjamin, a Sheriff's Deputy saw the smoke and called in the fire.

Thompson's Parks Superintendent Gleen Somers said the Monticello Fire Department were on their way even before the fire alarm went off.

“It was a great save. They [Monticello Fire Department] did a great job,” said Benjamin. “We were really fortunate. Just a few more minutes and the building would have been gone.”

Along with the Monticello Fire Department, Hurleyville, Rock Hill, White Lake, Forestburgh and Bethel FAST Team responded with mutual aid. Fallsburg and Liberty were on standby.

Rieber said they would be isolating the damaged part of the building so the other half of the building can be used while repairs take place.

At the September 17 town board meeting, Rieber said they would be hiring a public adjuster and will file an insurance claim.

“We are grateful for offers of support from the village, county, Forestburgh and other townships,” said Rieber. “Thankfully nobody was hurt.”
