Community gathers to support the Hahn Family

ROSCOE -- Community members gathered at Roscoe Beer Company to support the Hahn family of Hilly Acres Farm after a devastating fire on July 9 cost them one of their barns, 400 chickens and 300 bales of hay.

Nearly 300 people attended Tuesday night's fundraiser, according to Northern Farmhouse Pasta Owner Bob Eckert. In addition to the fundraiser, the GoFundMe page, created by the North Branch Inn Executive Chef JP Medina, doubled its goal of $5,000 in the week that it has been active.

“If you really know them, there's no question, you want to help them,” Eckert said. He stated how “farms are the backbone of our community,” and how he was compelled to help the Hahn's because of their selflessness that they have presented in the past. “The community we are in, when there are farm families that need us, no matter what happens, we need to step in,” Eckert added.

The morning after the fire, Eckert created a Facebook post promoting a fundraiser to benefit the Hahn family. He only expected around 30 people, but soon the event gained traction online and 454 people shared the original post. Roscoe Beer Company reached out to Eckert and his wife Jennifer about hosting the fundraiser at their venue, considering the expected number of attendees drastically grew.

“There is not a nicer bunch of people than the Hahns,” Sullivan County Recycling Coordinator Bill Cutler said. He has known the Hahns since the late 1970s, and Cutler added how their food has sustained the community. “It's so important to support them,” he added.

In addition to Northern Farmhouse Pasta and Roscoe Beer Company, several other businesses worked together to provide food, drinks, and entertainment to the crowd during this fundraiser, including Prohibition Distillery, Justin Sutherland of Somewhere in Time Farm, Dayna Halprin from Early Bird Cookery, and Eminence Road Farm Winery.

“You guys have just helped us so much to get through what we thought was something we would not get through,” Tanya Hahn said at the fundraiser. “Without your support I don't know where we would be.”

Her husband Andy added, “I can't say thank you enough.”
