Conservative dinner and dance draws crowd

CALLICOON — A mixed blessing of politicians were on hand Saturday evening as the recently elected Conservative Party State Chairman Gerard Kasser was introduced at the Sullivan County Conservative Party's 1st Annual dinner-dance held at the Villa Roma Clubhouse.

Kasser was elected to lead the Conservative Party in February, replacing retired Michael R. Long who served as chairman from December of 1988 until January of this year.

Kasser, following his introduction by Sullivan County Conservative Chairman Ed Magilton, applauded Magilton as "a good Chairman and someone the state party respects. Ed is an individual we take council from."

In speaking about former State Chairman Michael Long, Kasser noted that Long was honored at a $500 dollar a plate dinner in New York City.

Traveling around the state, Kasser as the new state chairman has already visited some 12 county dinners around the state.

Kasser stressed the point that he is a political chairman in the "old school ways and that the Conservative Party is really about local County government. It was never really about Albany and living their lives without government torturing them."

In remarks directed at Albany, the State Conservative Chairman said "this Albany is not the Albany I knew from years back, and it's not about the Democratic Party, it's about certain people in the Democratic party,” Kasser said.

"Albany right now has too many people that do not take the time to understand you and they suffer from not having any moral compass so this is why the Conservative Party looks for the best candidates who will represent your thoughts and feelings."

Stressing the importance of the use of social media, Kasser noted that he has hired a firm that will get the Conservative Party message out to the public.

"If we can open people's eyes and get our message out, this will overcome negative press and we can do this with a better issue agenda and get people to listen to us rather than argue with what we offer," the state chairman said.

The new State Conservative Party chairman mixed well with Conservatives, Republicans and Democrats attended the event which included Jim Farrell, Nancy Buck, Russell Reeves, Alan Kesten, Mike Schiff, Eric Chaboty, B. Elton Harris, Albee Bockman, Robert Doherty, Kathy LaBuda, Michael Brooks, George Conklin, Luis Alvarez, Joe Perrello, Ira Steingart , Daniel Sturm, Bernard Cohen, Susan Harte, Thomas Bose, Gary Maas, Ed Grund, Eileen Hennessy, Vincent Alukonis, Joe Levner, Vincent McPhillips, Leigh Sherman, Janet Lybolt, Julius Greenberg and Scott Mace.

Sullivan County Conservative Party Chairman Ed Magilton noted that this is the first time they have held a dinner dance and that he hopes this will become an annual event.
