County determines more than 200 people shouldn't be registered to vote in Bloomingburg

BLOOMINGBURG — On Friday, the Sullivan County Board of Elections released the results of its legally-required administrative review of 250 challenged voters in the Village of Bloomingburg.

The Board had already made an initial determination in November on the validity of the voters' registrations, but the law requires those voters have a chance to make their case in front of the Board.

Twenty-one people did meet with commissioners, and last week, the Board ultimately ruled that 205 voters' registrations should be cancelled, as they do not meet the residency requirements to vote in Bloomingburg.

Nine other people were determined to be valid Sullivan County voters but not within village limits, while 36 were found to be valid village voters.

The voters were challenged prior to the special September 30 election asking residents whether they wished to dissolve the village or not.

However, the numbers and determination for now are a moot point, as court battles continue - including just-filed suits over this latest ruling from the Board.

And even if the registrations are ultimately cancelled, whether they'll have any impact on the dissolution vote - whose results were certified by the Board through court order earlier this year - is uncertain. The question on dissolving the village failed 107-85.

Assistant County Attorney Lori Bertsch-Brustman noted that the Board of Elections is only empowered to rule on the registrations, not their relevancy to the election outcome, which is a separate matter that has also been fought in court.
