College's craft fair kicks off the holidays in major way

These mesmerizing lamps were the hit of Sunday's fair, thanks to the creativity of Paul Berger and Brittany Leventoff of En-Lightened. The Monticello residents found themselves explaining the fascinating lights to hundreds of intrigued passersby. Made of heavy-duty plastic, the LED/incandescent lamps can be used inside and outside, and some even come equipped with a remote control so you can change their colors! Bob Bode and his fellow craftsmen from Catskill Mountain Crafts displayed an array of shiny, kid-friendly wooden toys and lawn ornaments, including this handsome choo-choo train some lucky boy or girl will find underneath their Christmas tree next month! (Catskill Mountain Crafts, 607-655-2642)

These adorable hand puppets were crocheted by Joan Jones of Maybrook, who also crochets and knits toys, caps, scarves, hats, bags, placemats, rugs, even dog leashes! Sam and Karen Amodeo of Hyde Park displayed one of the most eye-catching tables of the fair, featuring specially constructed and lacquered pepper grinders, amongst many other creative offerings. Their Timber Transitions company also creates bowls and decorative items from imported Australian red and brown mallee, some with stone inlays. (timbertransitions@gmail.com, 845-235-7714)

Starting in January, more than two dozen members of the Calico Geese Quilting Guild spent 600 hours stitching together 7,560 palm-sized pieces to create this gorgeous queen-size quilt as the prize in their annual fundraising raffle. Happy to show it off Sunday were, from the left, Sally Abrams, Nancy Michel and Cindy Babcock.

Nada Clyne of Woodbourne offered an array of stunningly beautiful pendants, pins, jewelry and artwork, much of it featuring local scenes. Indeed, this image of a tree in a field is from a photograph of a real tree in a real field near Liberty! Nada paints the bottom layer over the background, then overlays prints of photos made on transparency paper, and in this case inserted gold leaf into a mirror to give the piece a shimmering, diaphanous quality. Jeffersonville resident Anne Marchal displayed her hand-painted glassware at the fair, offering vases, bowls and candleholders with unique, often floral designs. Her work can be found at Jeff Auction, the new business inside the former Other Store on Main Street in Jeffersonville.

LOCH SHELDRAKE — Black Friday arrived on Sunday in Sullivan County, when up to 5,000 people descended on the Paul Gerry Fieldhouse at SUNY Sullivan in Loch Sheldrake.

The draw was the 45th Annual Holiday Arts and Crafts Festival and the more than 140 truly talented vendors within.

SUNY Sullivan Director of Special Events and Campus Activities Hillary Egeland confirmed the participation was tremendous - and so were the shopping opportunities to be found across the humongous width of the fieldhouse.

Alas, however, if you missed it this year, you'll have to wait till next November to catch it again!
