Delaware discusses project with county

New park and sewage plant in Callicoon

HORTONVILLE - Two members of the county Department of Planning were on hand at the Delaware town board meeting on Wednesday night to discuss a project that the town and the county will work on together.

The town has been working on relocating its wastewater treatment plant for a while. They found a location on Creamery Road at the old campground site (past the youth center). The county also has an interest in that land; they want to turn it into a park.

The town and county are happy to be working together on this project, said Town Supervisor Ed Sykes. “It's a great project for the town,” he said.

From the Planning Department were Commissioner Freda Eisenberg and Heather Jacksy. Jacksy explained that the Trust for Public Land is helping them purchase the property. But there was some confusion over how to submit a grant application.

“We initially thought the county could put in an application for the whole project,” Jacksy said. “But we were advised by the county attorney that purchasing a parcel for the wastewater treatment for a town is not a county purpose.” The attorney advised that they see if the Trust for Public Land could put the application in.

They found out they couldn't transfer the land to both parties. “So we're shifting gears again,” Jacksy said. “Trust for Public Land is still good with purchasing the parcel should an application from the county for the park and from the town separately for the wastewater treatment facility site be successful.”

Then, they would subdivide the land. Both the town and the county would move forward with getting a grant to purchase the subdivided parcel of land.
