ROCKLAND — The New York State Police (NYSP) are investigating a rear-end collision of a police car that occured on February 10 in the Town of Rockland.

According to the NYSP, a trooper from the Liberty barracks stopped a vehicle traveling westbound on State Route 17 around 6:15 p.m. on Monday for a vehicle and traffic law violation.

The trooper spoke with the driver of the vehicle and returned to his vehicle. As the trooper was stepping out of his vehicle to issue the citation, he heard a radio transmission and shut the door to his vehicle to listen to the transmission.

Seconds later, the trooper's vehicle was struck in the rear and side. The force of the impact pushed the police car into the vehicle that was being issued the citation.

The trooper was transported to Orange Regional Medical Center in Middletown with non-life-threatening injuries. He was treated and released.

The person who struck the trooper's vehicle was not injured nor was the operator of the vehicle that the trooper initially stopped.

State Police Public Information Officer Steve Nevel said that tickets for the driver who crashed into the police car may be pending.

This crash still remains under investigation, but State Police are reminding motorists on the highway to move over a lane and give space for emergency vehicles.
