Fallsburg summer camp closed for 2020

FALLSBURG — After much discussion, the Town of Fallsburg has decided not to operate the town day camp for 2020 due to the growing concerns over COVID-19.

“We don't feel we can safely do that,” said Town of Fallsburg Supervisor Steven Vegliante during June 22 virtual town board meeting.

“I apologize and feel bad about saying that. But at this point, we don't feel we can safely do that to our satisfaction,” added Vegliante.

The day camp is organized by the Boys and Girls Club of Town of Wallkill.

According to the Boys and Girls Club's website, “Safety remains our number one priority. Due to the global COVID-19 pandemic, we, in collaboration with the Town of Fallsburg, thought the camp would not be able to be held in accordance with the safety guidelines put forth by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and New York State Department of Health (DOH). We believe it is in the best interest of the safety of our campers and staff members to forego this summer.”

The Town of Thompson and Liberty have also followed suit and will not be opening their camp this summer due to COVID-19.

However, in the Town of Bethel and Mamakating, they have modified their day camp and reduced the number of campers.

According to the Centers for Disease Control (CDC), the lowest risk for campers are those who stay in small groups and remain six feet apart and do not share objects.

According to the CDC, outdoor activities are prioritized and suggest that all the campers be from the same local geographic area.

The Town of Fallsburg will not be opening their children's playground or dog parks for the time being due to COVID.

However, the campgrounds for seasonal campers are opening up slowly, which include RV camping at Morningside Park.

Vegliante said they would have to comply with all CDC guidelines.
