Human remains found in woods

SWAN LAKE — In the early afternoon of Wednesday, November 27, New York State Police (NYSP) were alerted to human remains found off Briscoe Road in the Town of Liberty.

According to State Police Public Information Officer Steve Nevel on Wednesday, it was a deer hunter who stumbled upon the skeletal remains near 1286 Briscoe Road and alerted authorities.

By 1:22 p.m., New York State Troopers and Senior Investigator Mike Orrego responded to the area where they found human bones along with various articles of clothing, including Skechers shoes and pieces of corduroy pants.

The NYSP Forensic Investigations Unit also responded along with Sullivan County Coroner Albee Bockman.

The remains were sent for DNA analysis. They will also try to determine the age, gender and cause of death.

“We cannot say with certainty without the medical examiner's results,” Nevel said.

Investigators aren't ruling out any possibility, including homicide, accidental death or a possible medical episode.

There are several missing persons cases in the area, but Nevel said none of them are related to the remains found last week.

“The New York State Police is working diligently to identify this person,” he said. “This person possibly has relatives somewhere and hopefully we can provide some closure.”

Anyone with information relevant to this case is encouraged to contact the NYSP's Bureau of Criminal Investigation at (845) 292-6600.
