Liberty man charged with wife's murder

LIBERTY — Two teenagers looking for their mother ultimately led police to the site of an alleged murder over the weekend.

The 15- and 13-year-old children of 33-year-old Ramona Gonzalez headed to a neighbor's home in Liberty Friday, according to Liberty Police Chief Scott Kinne.

“They said they hadn't seen their mother since Thursday morning and were worried,” he related.

Liberty Police began investigating, and the trail of evidence led them and the NY State Police to Willow Heights Road in South Fallsburg, where Ramona's body was found with a fatal gunshot wound. Nearby was a shotgun, which police identified as the murder weapon.

Her husband, 65-year-old Jorge Gonzalez, was subsequently charged with second degree murder, a felony, and endangering the welfare of a child, a misdemeanor.

The misdemeanor charge stemmed from an alleged situation involving another of the Gonzalezes' children - a two-month-old baby.

“He had left the baby home alone for an extended period of time,” Kinne explained.

The children - including a fourth one, aged 5 years - are currently with family and friends, with Child Protective Services determining final placement.

Jorge Gonzalez remains in Sullivan County Jail without bail, awaiting a future Fallsburg Town Court appearance (where he was initially arraigned Saturday evening).

The Gonzalezes had lived in Liberty for about three months, said Kinne, moving there from Monticello.
