Metzger and Roscoe School District celebrate passage of amnesty bill

ROSCOE -- Students and faculty at Roscoe Central School (RCS) ad reason to celebrate alongside State Senator Jen Metzger on Thursday after her successful efforts to pass a bill regarding building repairs from nearly a decade ago.

With employee changeover throughout the years at Roscoe, a waiver that was supposed to be sent and filed got lost along the way, resulting in the loss of aid from the state. In 2017 the New York State Education Department determined that paperwork that RCS was supposed to file was missing, and nearly a decade of aid was going to be taken back, totaling around $1.4 million.

A bill to resolve this was first introduced in 2018 by Assemblywoman Aileen Gunther and State Senator John Bonacic, however it was vetoed just before the beginning of 2019 by Gov. Andrew Cuomo.

Metzger was already intent on resolving the issue before she was even sworn into office, and after re-introducing the bill alongside Assemblywoman Gunther, Senate Bill S2611 was passed on November 8, 2019 and was then signed by Gov. Cuomo.

As a result of the bill, the district will not face any financial loss.

“Meeting the Roscoe students and faculty and touring their beautiful school was the highlight of my week,” Senator Metzger said.

From handmade “thank you” cards, to a performance by the middle school band, everyone at RCS seemed to have a special gift for the Senator who worked tirelessly to support the small school.

“The students, staff, administration and the entire Roscoe community cannot thank Senator Metzger enough for all her efforts to support our school,” said Roscoe Central School District Superintendent John Evans.

Roscoe students Alisha Trautschold, John Michael Madera and Breanna Kipp led the tour and received a framed copy of the law on behalf of the school.
