Unemployment jumps to 13.1 percent

According to preliminary data released by the New York State Department of Labor on Wednesday evening, Sullivan County's unemployment rate has skyrocketed to 13.1 percent. The following chart notes the April unemployment rates for Sullivan County in the past five years. It was 4.8 percent in both 2016 and 2017, before gradually decreasing to 4.2 percent in 2018 and 3.6 percent last April. At 13.1 percent, Sullivan County's unemployment rate is the lowest of all counties in the Hudson Valley region, with Orange County having the highest at 15.6 percent. The region's unemployment rate is 14.2 percent which is the highest (regardless of month) in the history of the current series.
