MAMAKATING — The New York State Police (NYSP) is investigating a homicide that took place in the hamlet of Summitville Monday morning.

Sullivan County 911 received reports around 8:50 a.m. yesterday morning of a person with multiple gunshot wounds at 286 Mount Vernon Road.

When troopers and deputies arrived they found Ashley Greene, 33, outside behind the residence. She was declared deceased at the scene.

Police interviewed the victim's mother and learned that Richard Boniface, 70, had fled the scene in his 2006 black Ford F-250 pickup truck. Police put out an All-Points Bulletin and flooded the area looking for Bonafice.

“A short time later, [police] were able to identify that the pickup truck had entered a wooded area just off Roosa Gap Road in the Town of Mamakakting,” said Captain Michael Drake of the NYSP Bureau of Criminal Investigation during a press conference streamed by the Times Herald Record on Monday afternoon. “An immediate search of the area discovered the suspect, Richard Boniface, deceased against a tree with what appeared to be a self-inflicted gunshot wound.”

Drake said Boniface had a business type relationship with Greene and previously hired her to do odd jobs. “There was an association between the two,” Drake said.

Police recovered a 9mm handgun near Boniface's body, but could not say if it was the same weapon used to kill Greene.

The investigation is ongoing.
