Once Upon a Time in Narrowsburg…

Fairy tales were at the heart of the second annual Deep Water Literary Fest held in Narrowsburg over the weekend. Writers, actors and artists converged to bring the finest and newest in the literary world to multiple venues around town.

Large crowds turned out to see a series of readings and performances, as well as panels and cabaret events that were held across three days. New and old joined in presenting myriad works, which is to say that fairy tales are universal. The Brothers Grimm, Jacob and Wilhelm Grimm, published stories in the 19th century. And their stories are still told today —across many cultures.

The festival kicked off with A Midsummer Night's Dream dinner held at the Narrowsburg Union with food by Early Bird Cookery. The festival continued with readings and performances, and a panel discussion on “The Art of the Essay” featuring notable authors Luc Sante, Sloane Crosley, Alexander Chee and Laura Kipnis.

The festival ended with a presentation of stories written by Sullivan West High School students accompanied by original artwork by acclaimed artists, including Jorge Colombo and Emily Flake. The artworks were sold in a silent auction with proceeds split between Sullivan West arts programs and the festival.
