Forestburgh's auditions attract top-notch talent!

Posted

By 10 a.m. on Sunday, there were over 50 people of all ages assembled in the lobby of SUNY Sullivan's E-building, waiting their turn to show off for Forestburgh Playhouse's Local Auditions.

“We are hoping to find really talented performers who would be interested in performing in our kids' show and also in our main stage productions. So, we're looking for a lot of talent,” said Franklin Trapp, the Forestburgh Playhouse producer.

The open-call auditions attracted people from all over, including Cooks Falls, Wurtsboro and Manhasset on Long Island. Forty-plus children and adults could look forward to being cast in “Kinky Boots,” “The Full Monty,” “Ragtime,” and Forestburgh's summer kids' show “Alice in Wonderland.”

Most of the aspiring actors sang and some delivered monologues. All the auditions were videotaped so that the producers could review them if necessary. “There are a lot of people that come in really quickly and we can also send things to directors if we need to,” said Trapp.

Many of those who auditioned weren't there for a specific part. Trapp explained that, “Some will have a very clear idea of what they're interested in, and some of them will have no idea what we do, or what the theatre's all about, and they'll come in because they're interested in the experience.”

Indeed, 15-year-old Julia Kurthy from Rock Hill said she “thought it would be a good experience” to audition. She's currently in “Sister Act” at Monticello High School and has previous experience at the Robert J. Kaiser Middle School, as well as with Shadowland Stage's Acting Academy.

Forestburgh was also unveiling and signing up participants for their 2020 educational offerings - a Spring Musical Theatre Intensive and the Summer Theatre Education programs.

“So, we're talking about other opportunities for performing and learning. It's a big day,” said Trapp, turning his attention to the stage for the first in a long line of those who want to be a star.
