BETHEL — The world will be watching what happens in Bethel this summer as the 50th Anniversary of Woodstock will soon rock the county.

The travel booking website Expedia just announced the top 19 places to visit in 2019 and Bethel was listed at number 8.

“Its very exciting,” said Bethel Town Supervisor Dan Sturm. “Just the idea that they recognize the Town of Bethel in that manner is a good thing. The 50th is going to be a big event for the year.”

The travel site chose the cities and towns on their list that are “Celebrating fresh starts and past accomplishments this year,” and Bethel certainly fits the bill.

“We are the only town that can celebrate the 50th anniversary of Woodstock,” said Sturm. “We really want to focus on looking our best; we want flowers, we want to act our best and be welcoming and attract new people.”

According to Expedia, Bethel was chosen not only because of the upcoming 50th-anniversary concert, but also because “The area is a peaceful place to explore, with the Upper Delaware Scenic and Recreational River at hand.”

The site also lists a few places to stay and eat nearby, like Henning's Local in Cochecton Center and Floyd and Bobos in Liberty.

The travel site failed to mention the other local Bethel eateries near the venue like Dancing Cat Saloon; Bethel Market Cafe; Woodstock Oasis; Benji & Jakes; The Local Table and Tap; Hector's Inn; Sorella; Barrio Kitchen; Big Kev's, Fat Lady Cafe, Java Love Coffee Roasting Co., and the Stone Arch Inn.

The town of Bethel along with the Bethel Woodstock committee is planning to celebrate the 50th with a slew of events of their own.

According to Sturm, the town is planning a parade for the 50th anniversary along with movie night in the park.

Furthermore, Bethel is releasing a map soon that will be highlighting businesses and things to do in the area.

One highlight would be a historical trail that will showcase locations that were around during the festival in 1969.

“We have an opportunity here—the way we see it—the more people that come here and like it here will come back. Bottom line, we want to celebrate and enjoy.”
