Zane Grey Festival celebrates history of author and Delaware Valley region

ACKAWAXEN, PA - Families attending the 15th annual Zane Grey Festival had the opportunity to learn more about the region's history and resurgence, celebrating the Delaware River's comeback alongside the life of famous Westerns novelist Zane Grey.

“I think families can look forward to learning more about the Delaware Valley's rich cultural and environmental history,” National Park Service (NPS) Chief of Interpretation and Festival Organizer Ingrid Peterec said. The festival has run every year except 2006 because of flood damage the area saw that July.

Attendees had the opportunity to explore the Zane Grey Museum or take a guided tour of Dolly's Garden Path to learn more about the famous author; visit vendors from Pike, Wayne and Sullivan Counties with focuses on watershed stewardship, conservation, and river safety; and learn about the Delaware Valley's rich history from the colonial era to the Civil War to today.

The family event included numerous activities for children from local authors, crafts and games, weaving and spinning demonstrations and a scavenger hunt. And all attendees had the opportunity to see birds of prey with a presentation by Bill Streeter of the Delaware Valley Raptor Center including an immature bald eagle.

“The eagle is certainly a success story when it comes to the Delaware River,” Peterec said.
