Students and community come together to help hurricane victims

LOCH SHELDRAKE — Members of the Liberty and Monticello Rotary Clubs along with student and faculty volunteers from SUNY Sullivan came together on Wednesday to pack much needed clothing and supplies for victims of hurricane Harvey in Texas.

“We are very excited to be able to help out,” SUNY Sullivan President Jay Quaintance said. “It's been one disaster after another. It's overwhelming. I think it's really important for people who are distant from that to be able to make an impact on the lives of the people who are really suffering. Our students are stepping up. The community is stepping up.

Baby and medical supplies, essential toiletries, shirts, pants, and toys were among the items that were being shipped to Texas in box trucks, which were donated by the Rolling V Bus company and will travel to Friendswood, TX.

A group of Liberty and Monticello Rotary members went down soon after the storm hit Texas to be able to survey what areas were affected and needed help.

Soon after, various collection sites were established throughout Sullivan, Orange, and Wayne Counties, allowing residents and businesses to donate much needed supplies to those affected by the hurricane.

“It's just amazing. We had great support from all over the region,” Gary Siegel, Treasurer of the Liberty Rotary Club, said.

One of several students assisting with Wednesday's relief effort was SUNY Sullivan Student President Rosemary Guerra.

“The students wanted to help, so we reached out to the community and the media,” Guerra said. “We have a great turnout of volunteers and students. It's amazing to see all these students and community coming together to help.”

JetBlue Airlines donated airline tickets to five members of the Rotary Club, who will be traveling to Texas on Friday along with Rosemary Guerra in order to begin distributing supplies to families on Saturday.
