Man drowns after ATV crash

BETHEL — New York State Troopers and investigators responded to reports of a possible drowning on Gale Road in the Town of Bethel on Monday. Calls came in shortly after 2 p.m.

Upon their arrival, police observed an ATV floating upside down a short distance from the shore.

Divers from the Kauneonga Lake Fire Department located the body of an 86-year-old Mongaup Valley man submerged in about 30 feet of water.

State Police were assisted on the scene by the Sullivan County Sheriff's Department, Town of Bethel Constables, and fire companies from Kauneonga Lake, Smallwood, Lake Huntington, Youngsville, White Lake and Highland Lake. MobileMedic EMS and Hatzolah EMS were also on the scene.

The Mongaup Valley man, whose name has not been released, was declared dead at the scene. The investigation is ongoing.
