MONTICELLO — On July 17 at the Government Center in Monticello, Democrat David Sager formally announced his candidacy for the Sullivan County Clerk. He hopes to take the position that is currently held by County Clerk Daniel Briggs, who is retiring after his term ends.

Sager graduated from Monticello High School and has held prominent positions in Sullivan County throughout his residency. In 1999, he was elected the youngest coroner that the county has seen and he is a licensed chiropractor. Additionally, Sager has experience as a Legislator and Manager in the Village of Monticello.

Currently, Sager resides in Jeffersonville with his wife, Michelle, and his two sons Owen and Dylan.

“I have been and will continue to be a person who both believes in and is committed to public service,” Sager stated during his speech. He also stated that he has been endorsed by the Civil Service Employees Association (CSEA) and the Hudson Valley Labor Federation. “[I believe] my educational and professional background, as well as my history in office, would make me the most qualified candidate and county clerk.”

Issues that Sager plans to address if he is elected includes the productivity of the Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV), implementing new technology in the offices, and to continue and enhance county services for veterans.

“I will work proactively with not only our elected state officials, but work diligently within the New York State Association of County Clerks,” Sager said. He also plans to develop policies that will cater to all New York residents.

Sager is running against the Deputy County Clerk and Republican Candidate Russell Reeves who was appointed to his current position by Briggs, and endorsed by Sullivan County Sheriff Michael Schiff and the Republican Party. Reeves also serves as a councilman in the Town of Liberty.
