Jeff-Youngsville faculty starting line-up: This photo dates back to the early 1970s when many schools raised money through charity basketball games. The faculty team looked to be a formidable group at Jeff-Y with the players ready to go. From the left are Bob Breffle, Jeff Clewell, Ross Dimler, Bob Lynch, Jerry Davitt, Jim Scheutzow and Paul Zintel. With so many coaches on the team, we only wonder who was calling the plays.

Union School among ‘cool’ photos: This image was printed from a 4-inch by 5-inch glass plate negative found in a shed in Callicoon in 1981. Along with about 100 other plates, it had been stored in a suitcase that had deteriorated and that fell apart when moved. Despite the rough storage conditions, and although a few plates broke in the moving process, most of the images survived. One of the people who discovered them, Lisbeth Neergaard Kohloff, is a photographer, photo-historian, lecturer and tour organizer in Colorado. Kohloff donated prints made from the plates to the Sullivan County Historical Society, hoping to identify some of the images. This is an early 1900s image of the Callicoon Union School, located on School Street, with what appears to be teachers and perhaps the principal of the school.

Powerful waters: As mentioned in this week's Decades, the rains of 1942 had a disastrous effect on Long Eddy, and areas of nearby Pennsylvania. While we don’t have vintage photos of the flood available, the above postcard shows the Long Eddy acid factory which was said to have suffered some damage from the rising waters. The consequences of this flood of 80 years ago was felt for a long time as it displaced houses and even the Erie Railroad. Honesdale, Pa. was among the hardest hit, with at least 15 people who lost their lives, in addition to damage to houses and businesses.

'Main Street' looking east: The Republican Watchman reported in 1908 that Monticello village trustees had decided to change several street names, including renaming Main Street to Broadway, and discontinuing the use of “East” and “West” along its route. This postcard mailed in 1908 shows The Osborn, a boarding house operated by the Osborn sisters, which was later demolished. The hotel was located on the south side of the street, across from the intersection of Jefferson Street with Broadway. Note the wooden bridge that spans the distance between the curb and the sidewalk, offering pedestrians a place to alight from a carriage without stepping into mud and other debris. Broadway was first paved in 1912.

Hust’s Pleasant Home This postcard by G.V. Millar shows Hust’s Pleasant Home in the background at right. Located on Bayer Road in North Branch, it was built by Preston Goodman, whose wife, Carrie Hust, ran a boarding house there. Goodman and his wife removed to Binghamton in later years, and Harold Hust and his wife Mildred operated a dairy farm on this property. Leader, strike up the band!: The history of music in the county’s early days is phenomenal, with numerous local marching bands leading the way. Most of us are well-acquainted with the Callicoon Center Band, which has continued its history for many years in that hamlet. Jeffersonville, Liberty and Youngsville bands, too, have been featured on these pages. This group may be a version of the Youngsville band, because Philip Jacobs of Youngsville appears to be the fourth man from the left in the lineup. The photo is by E.L. Graeff, a noted photographer of Liberty, which casts some uncertainty on the band’s affiliation. According to his obituary, Phil Jacobs “was the leader of the first band in Liberty, and was later prominent in musical activities in Youngsville.” Jacobs was married to Clara Inderlied of Youngsville in 1874, and they conducted the Maple Cottage boarding house in that hamlet. Jeff Bantams were a force: The Jeffersonville Bantams basketball team played at the Eagle Hotel’s hall (circa 1916) against such teams as the Youngsville Eagles, Roscoe’s Criterion Five, Liberty’s Emeralds, and the Lyceum Five of Monticello. The team featured Allington and Knell, forwards, Lieb, Lixfield and Brand, guards, and Bollenbach, center. Henry “Heiner” Bollenbach is standing, extreme right. Alan Lieb is seated, lower right. It is likely that when the Eagle Hotel was destroyed in the Jeffersonville fire of 1918, the team lost its hall; little information could be found about the team after that. Demise of the Elmont: The Elmont Hotel, also known as the Piney Woods, was located on Carrier Street near Barton Road in Liberty. In this week’s column, we learn how the Elmont met its fate with flame in 1932. People have lamented the fact that few hotels of the past remain for the curious to view in person. Many of these immense buildings were built completely of wood, and built in a way that made them more vulnerable to fire, which is unfortunately the way that some of these structures departed. Those who have an interest in early hotels can find information in the archives of the Sullivan County Historical Society in Hurleyville.
