36th Annual Academic Achievement Ceremony recognizes top students

LIBERTY - On June 1, Sullivan BOCES held its Thirty-sixth Annual Academic Achievement Ceremony at SUNY Sullivan to honor the County's top students of the class of 2021.

The Superintendents of Schools, Principals, Board Presidents, and Jay Quaintance, President of SUNY Sullivan, attended the event. Mrs. Sandra Gerry, Founder/Chairwoman of Sullivan Renaissance, was the guest speaker.

Mrs. Gerry opened by congratulating the students on their outstanding academic achievement and explained how each generation faces challenges that have tested them, COVID-19 being the challenge that has changed the lives of our graduates.

According to Gerry, “You are stronger for going through these trying times, but now that you have your roots in life, it's time for you to spread your wings. Go out into the world, spread your wings and soar, experience all that the world has to offer, and learn from others, but do give back. Be in the moment, and take time to appreciate each phase of your life.”

Mrs. Gerry shared her journey that lead her to become a teacher and prepare her to make a difference in the community. She explained how this is an exciting time in the students' lives and told them not to succumb to instant gratification. Work hard to do what is needed to succeed. Stay the course you have prepared for yourself, be anything you want to be. It takes hard work, time and perseverance. Try to be in the moment and enjoy every step in your journey. Life goes by fast.

In closing, she asked that each student, wherever they find themselves in the future, make it a better place, leave their positive imprint, and take small actions to contribute to the community. “I challenge you to come back and make a difference. We wish you every success and happiness,” concluded Gerry.

At the ceremony, Dr. Robert M. Dufour, District Superintendent at Sullivan BOCES, the School Superintendent, Board President, and High School Principal, presented the students with a Certificate of Achievement and a Rocket Notebook compliments of the Rolling V Bus Corporation.
