A helping hand to Head Start;

Sullivan County program receives $3.6 million

WOODBOURNE — Last week, U.S. Rep. Marc Molinaro (NY-19) announced Sullivan County Head Start (SCHS) has received $3,653,923 in federal funding.

The funds are available through the Head Start and Early Head Start programs. They are administered by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS).

The Head Start program provides comprehensive early childhood education, health, nutrition, and parent involvement services to children of low-income families.

The program is heavily supported by Rep. Molinaro, who is requesting for it to be robustly funded for Fiscal Year 2024.

“I am proud to announce that Sullivan County Head Start will receive $3.6 million in federal funding,” Rep. Mulinaro said. “The funding will ensure more children in Sullivan County have access to high-quality early education.

“Working in local government, I have seen the value of Head Start firsthand,” Mulinaro concluded. “It’s why I’m now working in Congress to expand the program’s reach.”

While Head Start has gone under a number of changes over the years, its Executive Director, Bertha Williams, has been with them since they started in 1989.

Williams has worked to guide the agency to reaching their goals for over 30 years, always with an eye on the prize.

She stated that the funding is used to operate programs at their Woodbourne and Monticello sites.

“The funds are made available through our budget year which runs April 1 through March 31, 2024,” Williams said.
