A remembrance to my grandmother & brother: Anne and Nickolas Gorr

Merriam-Webster Dictionary defines the word Grandmother as a noun that means the mother of one's father or mother.

To me, my definition is so much more. My definition would be kind, generous, and witty. My definition would include the matriarch of the family, the peacemaker and glue that holds us all together.

I've written and rewritten this about a dozen times and finally decided that instead of telling you all things you already know about this amazing woman that we lovingly call Annie, Mah, and Gram, I would rather speak directly to her.

Gram, thank you so much for being my very best friend in this life. Thank you for giving me the gift of patience and your quick wit. You instilled the drive to always learn and do my best.

You gave me the love of reading and you taught me the value of great friendships. You are a big part of who I am today. So thank you for all that you have ever done for me and please continue to shine down on me as I still need you. I love you always and forever.

Nickolas, I've had over a year to think of what to write for this very occasion. I can't for the life of me come up with the perfect words that need to be said about you. I think we can all agree that you were always there to lend a helping hand, full of life and energy, full of love and support to those who needed it around you.

You made life a better place for us. Not many people saw your struggles and the sadness that sometimes filled your heart, but I hope you hear me every day when I tell you I miss you, I'm proud of the person you were, and I love you with all of my heart.

I feel you and your presence every single day. I am filled with many emotions when I listen to the radio or music on my phone, as our lives revolved heavily around music.

We had a song for every occasion, no matter what it was. I hope you're free and know your self-worth and value now. I leave you all with lyrics from one of Nickolas' favorite artists, Mac Miller: “No matter where life takes me, find me with a smile. Pursuit to be happy, only laughing like a child. I never thought life would be this sweet, it's got me cheesing from cheek to cheek. I ain't gonna wait for nothing, cause that just ain't my style, life couldn't get better, this gon' be the best day ever.”
