Anna A. Mathern formally of Jeffersonville, NY and Greenacres, Florida passed away peacefully with her family by her side on August 24, 2024 at Wayne Memorial Hospital, Honesdale, PA. She was 97 years old.
Anna was born in Corning, New York. She was the daughter of the late Charles and Eleanor Hess Zieres.
Anna started school as a young girl in Buck Brook and graduated from Delaware Valley School. On March 30, 1947, she married the love of her life Harry [Bud] Mathern, Jr. They lived in Jeffersonville and continued to run the family business of Mathern Truck Bodies and raise their family.
Anna started working for New York Telephone Company as a telephone operator. Anna started working at the Jeffersonville phone office when the operator would ask “number please” and were then plugged into the correct party. From Jeffersonville, her job moved her to Monticello and on to Kingston, NY. After 40 years, she retired from the telephone company.
After retirement she moved to Greenacres, Florida and remained there for 33 years. Anna continued to work at a condominium on the ocean until a few weeks before her 90th birthday.
One of Anna’s passions in life was sewing. She made many of her own clothes and altered clothes for others. Anna had a love for bowling. She belonged to leagues both in Jeffersonville and Florida. She also traveled in bowling tournaments. Anna loved to dance polka, play cards with friends, and traveling. Anna loved to travel with her dearest friend Lotte Crager. Together they enjoyed many wonderful trips traveling to Sweden, Europe, and throughout the United States.
Anna was an early member of the Jeffersonville First Aid Corps along with her husband Bud, who was a founding member. She was Grand Marshal at the 125th Anniversary parade celebration for the Jeffersonville Fire Department. She was also a member of the telephone company pioneers.
Anna was survived by one son Gary and his wife, Myra of Jeffersonville, one granddaughter Lisa Mathern of Jeffersonville, and one great-granddaughter Olivia Mathern, also a sister Eleanor Glassel, along with several nieces and nephews. In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by her husband Harry [Bud}, and a special sister-in-law Virginia Puerschner Frank, a nephew Robert Glassel, and two brothers-in-law Edmund Puerschner and George Glassel.
After leaving Florida Anna was cared for by the angels at Bethany Village.
Visitation will be Tuesday, September 3, 2024 from 4-7 PM in the Harris Funeral Home, Railroad Ave., Roscoe, NY.
Funeral services will be Wednesday, September 4, 2024 at 11 AM in the funeral home. Pastor Ginny Bossley will officiate.
Dignified cremation will be provided by Harris Crematorium, LLC.
Burial will be in the Lutheran Cemetery, Jeffersonville, NY.
