Anna Dunnigan LeRoy, age 93, of Youngsville, N.Y., passed away on Sunday, September 19, 2021, at Garnet Health Medical Center, Middletown, N.Y.

Anna Elizabeth Ernst was born at home in the Bronx on March 17, 1928. She was the daughter of the late Ludwig and Anna Roth Ernst.

Anna graduated from high school in the Bronx. After graduating from school, she worked at the Central Hanover Bank and Trust Company. She was employed as a Securities Paying Agent, becoming the first woman to hold the position in that bank.

On September 10, 1949, she married John Dunnigan. In 1953, they moved from the Bronx to Youngsville, N.Y. They soon became the happy parents of two sons, John and Jed. In 1963, Anna and her husband became the proprietors of John’s General Store in Youngsville. They were active community volunteers until her husband’s unexpected death in 1971. Anna later married Stanley LeRoy and together they ran the store until his death in 1996. Anna kept her family, business, and community spirit moving forward until her retirement from running the store seven days a week in 2008.

Anna operated the general store for 45 years where she held court - giving advice and words of encouragement to her many friends and lending a sympathetic ear. She was fondly referred to as “The Unofficial Mayor of Youngsville”.

Anna loved her community and was an active volunteer. She was a Girl Scout leader for many years, a founding member of the Jeffersonville First Aid Corps, a member of the Youngsville Fire Department Ladies Auxiliary, a member of the United Reformed Church, and a member of the Wyoming Chapter of the Eastern Star. In addition, she served as president of the Greenhill Cemetery Association, president of the Liberty Loomis Hospital Auxiliary – Youngsville division, and she was on the board of the Youngsville Water District. Anna had great enthusiasm for the Youngsville Environmental Preservation Committee and served as president. She was a strong, independent woman who will be missed dearly by all who knew her.

Anna is survived by her loving and devoted sons, John Dunnigan and his wife Jill of Liberty, N.Y. and Jed Dunnigan and his wife Gabrielle of Beach Lake, PA. She is also survived by her beloved grandchildren, Michael Dunnigan and his wife Rachel of Boston, MA, Jessica Dunnigan of Boston, MA, Michael O’Reilly of Tampa, FL and Natalie O’Reilly of Kansas City, MO. Anna leaves behind many nieces and nephews, as well as many other members of her loving extended family and friends. She was predeceased by her parents, her husbands, John Dunnigan and Stanley LeRoy, and her four brothers and their wives – Ludwig and Ethel, Edward and Helen, Warren and Mary, and Val and Jean Ernst.

Family and friends will gather for visitation on Saturday, October 2, 2021, from 4 to 8 p.m. at the Stewart-Murphy Funeral Home in Jeffersonville, N.Y. A funeral service will be held at the funeral home on Sunday, October 3, 2021, at 11 a.m. with Ginny Bossley officiating. Burial will follow at the Greenhill Cemetery in Youngsville, N.Y. Masks will be encouraged to be worn at the funeral home.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Greenhill Cemetery Association, P.O. Box 112, Youngsville, N.Y. 12791 or the Youngsville Fire Department/Ladies Auxiliary, 1822 Shandelee Rd., Youngsville, N.Y. 12791.
