Tri-Valley ends busy week with loss to Chester

GRAHAMSVILLE – Tri-Valley had their work cut out for them last week, facing Roscoe, Eldred, Chapel Field and Chester with just one day off in the middle. After getting an early week win against Roscoe, the Bears dropped the final three games, including a 21-7 loss to Chester on Friday.

Tri-Valley’s offense hibernated for the first four innings, striking out 8 times in the first three innings and only getting two baserunners. In the fourth the Bears were down 15-0 due to a combination of tired arms and some defensive miscues. The Bears failed to score in the 4th against the Hambletonian reliever, and entered were in position to be blanked for the second day in a row after losing 12-0 against Chapel Field.

Chester added one final insurance run in the 5th to take a 16-0 lead, and the Bears needed to mount a 7-run comeback to stay alive. The bats came alive for the Bears, and aggressive baserunning led to some late manufactured runs. With four runs across in the inning and one out remaining, Tri-Valley seemed to be running out of time.

Some uncharacteristic errors by the Chester defense allowed Tri-Valley to plate the final three runs needed to force a sixth inning, trailing 16-7 going into the sixth.

In the sixth, Chester’s starters re-entered the game and plated five runs to increase the lead back over the mercy limit. In the home half of the inning, Chester made a pitching change, and the Bears went down quietly in the 6th to end the game.

The Bears fell to 2-3 (0-1) after the loss to Chester, and are scheduled to visit Sullivan West for a League matchup with the Bulldogs this afternoon.

On the late comeback, Tri-Valley Coach Kevin Crudele said, “I’m happy with the way the team battled. It’s tough to get going in the late innings.” He also made note of the defensive blunders by saying, “We have some things that we need to work on and clean up.”

Andrew Cox led the Bears, going 2-3 at the plate with two RBIs. Tri-Valley scored seven runs on five hits, had four errors in the game and left five runners on base.
