I'm not supposed to get political in this Community Column. Not writing about recent events or expressing an opinion does not mean that I am not extremely upset. The Capitol, the actions of our President, the election, Covid, and BLM all deserve discussion and words...personally, I can't write them here.

Happy birthday to Todd Parlo, Bob Ernst, Mike Fisher, Rita Townsend, Kathleen Lasher, Pat Murtagh, Helen Manzione, Danielle Gaebel and Robin McClernon. In honor and in memory of Frances Rosenberg's birthday this week, order in Chinese for dinner.

Public Service & Covid alert: Wear your mask. Get tested. The ‘UK strain' has been found in NYS and Covid19 is still with us! Upstate numbers are not good and hospital beds are lacking. Our medical staff is at the threshold of exhaustion. The vaccine has become available and we will have to be patient. As of this writing Level #1 is receiving it. Level 1A, vaccinated next, includes most other emergency and health care workers and teachers. For more information, contact Public Health. Be reminded that only with the second dose are you 95% protected. In the meantime, contact your doctor for advice on the flu and/or pneumonia shot. If traveling, check area Health Department restrictions and protocols.

Watch for Federal and State stimulus aid has come through. For those collecting benefits, the Pandemic Unemployment Assistance may need adjustment and your continual certification.

If what we've had to endure in 2020 - Covid, quarantining, financial, social and political challenges - have gotten to you and it feels too much to bare in ‘21, it is time to turn for help. Talk to a professional or a friend. Distract this dark side with a good walk or chance to commune with nature. Express yourself in a journal. Let's stay positive and help each other out. The Empire State Trail is open from Manhattan to Canada and from Albany to Buffalo. Catskill Mountainkeeper and Trailkeeper.org also offer miles of hiking.
