Big Buck contest update

SULLIVAN COUNTY -- At 5:30 a.m., Tri-Valley Varsity Boys Basketball Coach and Town of Liberty Parks and Recreation Working Supervisor Kevin Delaney was waiting in his lucky spot on the New York City Department of Environmental Protection's property in Neversink, about a mile into the woods.

After waiting about three hours, Delaney harvested a beauty from 150 yards out with his Winchester 270 rifle.

The buck which weighed 154-lbs, had a rack that scored 74, and currently leads the Biggest Rack and Heaviest Deer divisions of the Sullivan County Democrat Big Buck Contest.

This was the fourth deer of Delaney's hunting career that he's taken at his lucky spot, but by far the biggest. He hunts there with his uncle Gary, and is happy the work paid off.

“Sometimes you have a gut feeling,” Delaney said of why he chose that spot. “I've had good luck there. Until it disappoints, I'm going to keep going back.”

In the Biggest Rack contest, Forest Darder is in second place with a buck that scored 71.25, followed by Rich Devoe (64.25) and James Matos (61.75) in third and fourth place respectively.

NOTE: We are still awaiting contest entries from multiple weight stations, so please be patient. Until next time, happy hunting!
