Celebrate your local library in April

National Library Week, first sponsored in 1958, is a national observance in April offering a time to celebrate the contributions of our nation’s libraries and librarians and to promote library use and support according to the American Library Association.  This year’s theme for the week of April 23-29 is “There’s More to the Story.” Most people know about the wealth of stories available at the library, from picture books and large print to audiobooks and ebooks. But there’s so much more to the story of libraries.

Libraries are welcoming centers of information and discovery. They offer their communities a wealth of programs for all ages, services ranging from printing and faxing to computer use and tech help, tools for lifelong learning, creativity, and enrichment, and a place for community members to meet up and form new friendships.

Through the Sullivan County Public Library Alliance (SUPLA), libraries in the county have access to a Library-by-Mail Program, collaborate on the biennial Sullivan County Youth Book Festival, and offer programming with the Sullivan County Poet Laureate, and access to shared 3-D printers and laptops.

Visit your library during National Library Week to find out what they are offering. At Livingston Manor Library, author Ed Van Put will be speaking about his book, The Remarkable Life of James Beecher on Thursday, April 27th at 5:30pm. And throughout National Library Week, they’ll have giveaways for library visitors, drawings for prizes, and craft activities for children.

Liberty will have small prizes for kids who checkout books or get new library cards during National Library Week along with a number of events including STEM Day on the 25th at 3:15pm, a book discussion about “One Two Three” by Laurie Frankel on the 27th at 1pm, a movie matinee on the 28th at 1pm, and Super Hero Day on Saturday, April 29th at 1pm.  Check their website for more information and to register.

During National Library Week, Western Sullivan Public Library (WSPL) will offer patrons a chance to see what their library is worth to them by filling in the Library Value Calculator.  The library will also have take-and-make kits for kids (sign up by 4/23 for pick up beginning 4/26), a tween maker space, the weekly Sew-cial Circle, and three book clubs. WSPL will also offer its weekly tech support both in-person and virtually at the three branches.

The Sullivan Public Library Alliance has partnered with Peck’s Markets to give Peck’s shoppers the opportunity to show their appreciation for the public libraries in Sullivan County by donating their change, or any amount they would like, and proudly signing a tag to be displayed in that store. Donations collected will go to SUPLA to help support programs like Library-by-Mail, the Sullivan County Poet Laureate, Youth Book Festival, shared 3-D printers and more!  This Peck’s fundraiser will take place between April 16th and 29th.
