County fare: Cream rises to the top at annual county indoor track championships

LOCH SHELDRAKE -- Amidst the panoply of track championships that began two weeks ago with the Divisional frays and continued last weekend with the OCIAA championships, the Sullivan County Indoor Track Championships offers a strong local allure as it features all the county track teams along with Ellenville in what was once a team competition but has morphed into one scored only on an individual basis. The county meet is the last run up to the Sectionals this weekend at West Point which in turn are a preamble to the State Qualifier and for the few elites, the state meet at Ocean Breeze Athletic Complex in Staten Island.

While the Paul Gerry Fieldhouse is mostly suited to running events, it does have a high jump area as well as a throwing zone to afford some of the events track and field kids will compete in at West Point.

From the results in each of the events one can readily determine who are most likely to be contenders in the upcoming sectionals. In the girls events, Fallsburg's Dolce McPherson continued her mercurial rise last evinced at the OCIAA championships with a win in the 300 (44.9) and a lap in the Comets' 4x2 relay. She took second in the 55 to Ellenville's Aallyan Chang. Fallsburg's Gisella King captured the 1500 (5:30.5) and ran a leg in the winning 4x2 lap relay. Liberty's Sydneigh Fleischman won the 1500 race walk (9:09), while Tri-Valley's Andrea Decker captured the shot put (27-3/4). Monticello's Taina DeJesus easily prevailed in the 55 hurdles with a time of 9.0 after capturing the title at the OCIAA championships.

Monticello dominated the boys events with seven victories out of the 11 on the docket. It all began with a win in the 4x2 lap relay garnered by Quentin Cruz, Evan Waterton, Jadon Swasey and Steve Bello (3:31.2). Waterton captured both the 1000 (2:45.9) and the 1600 (5:02.1) while Bello zipped to a win in the 600 (1:33.3). Elijah Rausch captured the 55 hurdles in 8.3 as well as running a leg in the winning 4x1 lap relay. Javante Stubbs captured the high jump (5-2).
