Defense propels Livingston Manor past Liberty

LIVINGSTON MANOR – The Lady Wildcats and Lady Indians had the early slot on Monday night, kicking off the night before the boys teams faced off. The game started off with the teams exchanging the lead, but ended with a 15-point win for Livingston Manor.

The two teams exchanged buckets throughout the first quarter with neither team being able to take an advantage offensively, but a last-second layup gave the Lady Wildcats a 10-8 lead going into the second quarter.

After Liberty’s foul troubles in Fallsburg on Friday, the Lady Indians played a much cleaner game, with neither team committing a foul in the first quarter.

In the second quarter, LM started on a 4-0 run, but a quick timeout by Liberty seemed to turn the tide as they answered with back-to-back buckets of their own to stay within two points.

Livingston Manor deployed their deny ball defense against Grace Wormuth, keeping the ball out of her hands and the Liberty offense off balance.

With a 14-12 lead, Livingston Manor put together a 7-0 run to take a 21-12 lead into the break.

In the two subsequent quarters, Livingston Manor outscored their opponents 17-11 to secure a wire-to-wire victory in front of the home crowd.

Mackenzie Carlson led all scorers with 17 points. Jocelyn Mills added six for Livingston Manor and Emily Curry led Liberty with six points of her own.

“We played patiently and made a lot of great decisions today on both sides of the ball. We let our offense develop, waited for open, high-percentage scoring opportunities, and stayed level-headed,” LM Coach Maggi Fitzpatrick said after the win.

“I’m proud of how my girls were able to make mid-game adjustments as Liberty changed their defensive strategy at halftime. This team is more and more fun to coach as the season goes on.”

In the boys game that followed, Liberty avenged the Lady Indians with a 63-23 win. Collin Flynn led all scorers with 16 points, and was complemented by Jeremy Simon and Londyn Guara’s ten points each. Dan Tolbert led Livingston Manor’s offensive effort with 12 points.

The Lady Wildcats visited Roscoe on Wednesday afternoon for a league matchup against the Lady Blue Devils and won 36-10. Mackenzie continued her hot streak with a 20-point performance to lead all scorers.

Liberty’s girls were on the road Wednesday night as well, taking on the Lady Bears in a non-league matchup. The Lady Bears put together a strong offensive performance behind Jenna Carmody’s 21 points for a 53-26 victory.
