Democrat welcomes new staff writer

CALLICOON—  Nic Birgler is the newest member of the Sullivan County Democrat team. Birgler is a local musician with a passion for writing and the local community. As a Staff Writer she will be responsible for photographing events, as well as writing articles for the newspaper and its 50-plus special sections.

Originally from Brooklyn, Birgler graduated from Saint Saviour High School in Park Slope. She continued her academic career at SUNY Cortland, studying sociology where she discovered a passion for helping people through Firefighting and EMS. After discovering her newfound passion, Birgler continued her educational journey at SUNY Dutchess, where she graduated with an Associate’s Degree in Emergency Medical Technology. After 3 years as an EMT, Birgler wanted a change of pace and fell back on her artistic talents as a musician and writer.

Passionate about local and honest reporting, Birgler hopes to help bridge the gap between people caused by media bias with reliable and unbiased reporting.

“Today’s media needs more unbiased and reliable reporting. I look forward to my articles sparking important conversations about things in my own backyard,” says Birgler.

“We are excited to welcome Birgler to the staff, where she will assist in coverage of the Village of Monticello, Towns of Cochecton and Highland, as well as other beats as assigned,” said Managing Editor Joseph Abraham. “We believe she has a bright future and can’t wait to watch her grow as a journalist.”
