T-V boys and girls capture D-6, Fallsburg girls win D-5 title

WEST POINT – It’s 6:00 p.m., and as the Army athletes have just packed up and exited the Gillis Field House at West Point when the legion of OCIAA division 2, 4, and 6 field enter en-masse to warm up for this year’s Divisional championships.

Liberty is in Division IV, while Tri-Valley, Sullivan West and Eldred populate Division VI. The following day Division III Monticello and Division V Fallsburg took their turns as the first round of the indoor track championships cycle get underway.

For the Sullivan County athletes, the divisionals constitute the first salvo of the indoor track championships, which are followed by the Sullivan County Championships slated for January 23 at the Paul Gerry Fieldhouse at SCCC. If any school closes it will result in a postponement until February 6.

Then comes the Sectionals on February 10, followed by the state qualifier and ending in the NYSPHSAA and Federation Championships at Ocean Breeze Athletic Complex on March 4.

Meets at West Point are a unique experience. The facility houses areas for all of the events. Obviously, the track with its eight lanes is the locus of the sprints, hurdles, distance races and the relays. But the field house also harbors a jumping pit for the long and triple jump, a high jump sector, a pole vault area as well as a throwing cage replete with its own circle for shot put and weight throw.

First time visitors are often overwhelmed by the hubbub of activity taking place simultaneously. For sports photographers and reporters, learning when to shift from one venue to the other comes from multiple tours of duty following indoor track.

Tri-Valley won both the boys and girls D-6 titles with many of the Bears recording personal records (PR’s) at the meet. Outstanding boys performances were registered by Adam Furman, Van Furman, Craig Costa, Noah Edwards, Nicholas Bender, Jacob Lucak, Thomas Houghtaling, Dayne Wall, Dylan Poley and Armaan Butler.

In the girls events, Amelia Mickelson was superb along with Em Richardson, Joyce Brooks, Tabitha Mulholland, Emily Hornbeck, Kaylee Poppo, Lily Siciliano and others.

Eldred standouts included John Morabito and Jeff Morgan. Thrower Lindsay Zgrodek evinced great strength in the shot put and weight throws.

Sullivan West standouts included Landon Volpe, Peter March, Hunter Ebeling, Robert Davidson, Dillan Hanslmaier, Keeley Schock, Katelynn Smith, Elanna Light, Layla Wilkin, Isabel Grund, Gracy Halloran, Kadence Everitt and others.

In Division IV, Liberty got fine results from Ivan Rodriguez, Nate Desrochers, Carlos Campos Castro, Sydania Foster, Audrey Krum and Ashley Nivelo Cruz.

In Division III, Monticello benefited from performances by Enrique Gonzalez, Tyrese Shaw, Tahir Denton, Eduardo Salinas, Frankie and Dominic Giorgianni, Christian Corces, Bobby Pape-Laucella, DeAndre Armour, Taina DeJesus, Meg Cruz, Chloe Brown, Chelsea Reynolds, Kalene Harris, Gabriella Brumbaugh and others.

Fallsburg girls made a quantum leap this year under the fine guidance of coach Danielle Halikias. They took first in Division V with standout performances from many athletes including Isiah Hershewsky, William Martinez, Yoshua Seraphin, Luke Oefelein, Kailen Odell Schreier, Edwin Morales, Hunter Doty, Jefferson Banegas Gallo, Angelina Levner, Zoey Ketchum, Meredith Anderman, Stephanie Granados, Allanah Owens, Mikalah Ballard, Bintou Darboe, Jaily Sebastian, Iyanna Smith, Cyriah Russell and Hayden-Marie Herrera.
