MONTICELLO — Last Friday afternoon at the Sullivan County Government Center, Catholic Charities of Orange, Sullivan, and Ulster hosted the 28th annual Alcohol, Tobacco, Gambling, and Drug Prevention Poster Ceremony.

The theme for this year’s contest was “Life Can Be Anything You Make of It When Choosing to Be Alcohol, Tobacco, Gambling, and Drug Free!” It was the first in-person award ceremony they held since the pandemic.

“If something is going wrong, you want to look around for the helpers,” Catholic Charities CEO Shannon Kelly said. “When I look around at all your posters, I think you all are the helpers. You are providing a message that helps people stay safe.”

Dan Hust, Director of Communications for Sullivan County Government, was invited to present the Alcohol Awareness Month Proclamation on behalf of the legislature.

April is Alcohol Awareness month in Sullivan County and the legislature calls upon the county’s citizens, parents, children, government agencies, and schools to help bring awareness to a critical health issue and draw the line to prevent underage drinking.

“You guys are on the frontlines, literally, of drawing that line,” Hust said to the students.

First, second, and third place awards were presented in three grade categories: Elementary (grades 1-4), Middle School (grades 5-8), and High School (grades 9-12), as well as two Grand Prize winners.

The Grand Prize was $250 each, one for English and one for Spanish. First place for each grade category was $150, second place was $75 each, and third place was $50 each.

Both grand prize winners are in the 10th grade at Tri-Valley; Ally Rogers won for English and Joselin Flores Galeos won for Spanish.

“I really didn’t expect to win,” Rogers said.

For grades 1-4, fourth grader Alexandria Mann won first place, fourth grader Taylin Frunzi was runner-up and third grader Desly Carcamo Bonilla was third place.

Sixth grader Angelina Lara-Jones won first place for grades 5-8, with fifth graders Zhara Snead and Kaylie Price being the first and second runners-up. All winners for grades 1-8 were from Benjamin Cosor Elementary (BCE).

For grades 9-12, 10th graders Carla Lara and Eden Noren took home first and second place, respectively, with 11th grader Quinn Allen placing third. Lara and Allen are both from Liberty and Noren is from Tri-Valley.

There were also 10 honorable mention winners for each of the grade categories. All of grades 1-4 honorable mentions were from BCE - seven third graders and three fourth graders.

Three kids from that BCE were an honorable mention for grades 5-8, all fifth graders. The other seven for that grade category are from Roscoe Central School, all seventh graders.

The honorable mentions for grades 9-12 were three ninth graders from BOCES, two 10th graders - one from Roscoe and one from Sullivan West, three 11th graders - one from BOCES and two from Sullivan West - and two 12th graders from BOCES.
