LAKE HUNTINGTON – Sullivan West hosted their annual baseball and softball tournament on Saturday, May 6. Both Sullivan West teams, both Monticello teams, O’Neill baseball and Livingston Manor softball competed from Section IX. The defending state champion Deposit/Hancock Eagles from Section IV were also in attendance, and showed their continued dominance as they swept the tourney going a combined 4-0.

In the early morning matchup, Monticello and Sullivan West squared off for both baseball and softball.

The Bulldogs shut out the Panthers 6-0 on the baseball diamond behind a complete game shutout by Jacob Hubert. He added two hits and three RBI in the win.

The Bulldogs scored their first two runs in the bottom of the third, added another in the fifth and then doubled their score in the sixth.

The Lady Bulldogs finished the first game with a 15-9 win before hitting the time limit. They got their offense going early with six runs in the bottom of the first inning, but Monticello scored seven straight in the top of the second and third.

Sullivan West answered with two in the bottom of the third to take an 8-7 lead and added four more in the bottom of the fourth to make it 12-7.

Monticello added two more in the top of the fifth to cut the lead to three, but SW answered with three more to get to the 15-9 final.

Both Sullivan West teams earned their trip to the chip, ultimately facing off against Deposit/Hancock.

The Eagles took on O’Neill in the second matchup of the day, winning 6-2 and earning a championship appearance against Sullivan West.

The Lady Eagles and Lady Wildcats faced off, and Addison Makowski tossed a 17 strikeout no-hitter against Livingston Manor, going on to win 15-0.

In the consolation matches, O’Neill defeated Monticello 6-5 after just five innings as the teams reached the time limit.

After going down 3-0 early, the Panthers battled back, outscoring their opponents 5-3 over the final four innings.

Livingston Manor hung on to win 8-5 against Monticello in the softball consolation. The girls battled throughout the game, with the lead changing a few times before the final.

Two late insurance runs in the sixth inning with Anastasia Niforatos and Zaylee Cox scoring put the game out of reach as LM went on to win 8-5.

Deposit/Hancock and Sullivan West faced off in the championship round, and the defending state champs showed their supremacy with big wins on both fields.

Sullivan West scored first and took a 1-0 lead going into the second inning, but DH scored 12 straight over the next four innings to win 12-1.

On the softball diamond, the Lady Eagles scored eight runs in the second and four in the fourth, while blanking the Lady Bulldogs in a 12-0 win.

The DH squad amassed 17 hits in the game, while the Lady Bulldogs managed just five baserunners in the game.

Both Deposit/Hancock teams are looking to contend in the state tournament again this year, and if the SW tournament is any indication, both teams will be a tough out this postseason.
