Eldred-Liberty-Sullivan West grapples with Port Jervis

LIBERTY -- In every athletic endeavor, each competitor seeks to bring his or her best to the moment. Ultimately, what they derive from that becomes a permanent part of their own growth and history, rife with the lessons learned through those engagements. But at the same time, the vast majority of sports endeavors are also part of a team effort so that one's individual contributions add to the collective performance of the team.

For the Eldred-Liberty-Sullivan West wrestling team, last season featured a bevy of superb individual performances that when taken collectively led to the Section 9 Division II title and several individual Section 9 Championship titles. Time marches on and a significant number of those grapplers have now graduated. Thus, the team accomplishments are not as great as they were.

That said, great efforts are being made and progress is evident while some of the remaining iconic wrestlers from last year are picking up where they left off. Eldred's Joey Curreri (120) and Sullivan West's Henry Peters (170) continue their assertive ways. Curreri pinned Port Jervis' Maddox McCormick in :17. Those rapid conquests have been and continue to be, emblematic of his pedigree, a family tradition he carries on from his brothers Noah and Nick.

Peters marshals great strength and resiliency. He has a dominant will and the body to enforce it. He pinned Port Jervis' Shawn St. Germain in 4:12 in a match in which he overcame some holds that would have spelled defeat for many grapplers. Peters and Curreri offer the best hope for Sectionals and beyond.

Teamwise, look for steady improvement as evinced in the prior match against Red Hook, one the team coaches reference as “the best effort to date.”
