Evelyn Cox passed away peacefully with family by her side on August 9, 2022. She was born on January 14, 1929 to Rose and Charles Gross.

Evelyn spent some of her youth living in Hunagry with her grandmother and sister Irma. Evelyn and Irma came to New York on the Queen Mary when she was nine and then resided in Flushing with her parents. She had many interesting stories of Hunagry and their adventures at sea! Her family moved to the Liberty area when she was a teenager and she graduated from Liberty High School. She worked at the Electric Company in Liberty.

She married the love of her life Gene Cox on August 20, 1950. Together with family and friends they built a beautiful house on Brisco Road which was their home for over 60 years. Evelyn is survived by her daughters Laurie Cox (Robert Skall) and Raye Ann Henderson (Dennis). She has five grandchildren Emily, Evan and Rachel Henderson and Eli and Lily Cox-Skall. She is also survived by her sister Irma and several nieces and nephews.

Evelyn was a devoted mother and homemaker who made three wonderful meals a day. As an adult that fact still amazes me! She threw wonderful parties and was very happy with family and friends around her. She will be remembered by her family for her wonderful holiday meals and celebrations.

She was a member of the White Sulphur Springs United Methodist Church where she sang in the choir, taught Sunday School and Bible School. When her children were grown she worked for the Liberty School District, first at the White Sulphur Springs Elementary School and then as a Teacher’s Aide at BOCES from where she retired.

The funeral will be a graveside service at Laurel Hill Cemetery on Saturday, August 20th at 10 am. It would have been Evelyn and Gene’s 72nd wedding anniversary. In lieu of flowers please make donations to the White Sulphur Springs United Methodist Church.

Arrangements have been entrusted to the Harris Funeral Home, West St. at Buckley, Liberty, NY www.Harris-FH.com 845-292-0001 or 845-439-5200.
