WURTSBORO — The meeting between Mamakating Town Board Councilman Matt Mordas and New York State Department of Transportation (NYSDOT) over the potential Exit 114 closing has been rescheduled once again.
The new date for this meeting is now set for September 25 from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m at the Town Park.
“It was pushed back earlier from previous times due to the Federal Highway Administration folks feeling they don’t have enough time to make the travel,” stated Mordas.
Discussions on Wurtsboro Mountain Road
Councilman Jim Post has been in talks of ideas of prohibiting all moving trucks and vehicles coming down Wurtsboro Mountain Road into the Village of Wurtsboro.
“Once again, signage was the topic as the Town and Fire Department were asking for large ‘No Trucks Allowed’ signs,” stated Post. Sullivan County Division of Public Works Commissioner Edward McAndrew is working on that request.”
It’s a lengthy and complicated process that has to follow numerous, strict regulation.”
Robbins and Post had proposed large billboards that would be placed on properties located along the road.
They would recommend that all trucks and tractor trailers find eastbound access to 209.
“This is not something that would not require any County DW pernission,” stated Post. “State Police have recommended that a live camera be placed somewhere on Wurtsboro Mountain Road right around Village and County lines ... hopefully word will spread around the trucking industry to use alternate routes when coming down the mountain into Wurtsboro.”
Supervisor Robbins
talks fireworks
Town Supervisor Michael Robbins has big plans for festivities come next summer. On July 12 next year the Street Fair will take place.
He also brought up that the following day, Sunday July 13, will be the 200th Anniversary of the D&H Canal. There will be a presentation in addition to everything done during Saturday’s Fair.
“The Town of Mamakating has never really done this before, and when they did it was a long, long time ago,” stated Robbins. “I’d like to do a fireworks display at the airport”.
He said that they still need to be given a day for when it can happen.
“I’ve got some feedback from a few people. Everybody’s in favor if it will be that night after the Street Fair,” stated Robbins.
He said everybody could go out to the Airport and a drone display would be first followed by the fireworks show afterwards.
He referred to the Town of Wallkill’s show this past year of a similar thing in which he stated was “a pretty awesome show”.
“Like I said, it’s in early stages and it’s going to take a year to get going. I’m going to keep everybody updated on how we’re doing,” said Robbins. “As long as the Board is in favor, I’ll see what I can come up with.”
“We’ve got a lot of obstacles to jump over so we’re gonna see how everything works out. Between insurances and legal stuff, hopefully we can make this work.”
Councilman Peter Goodman thought it was an “awesome idea”.
“A weekend that will be busy. It will be a really great celebration,” Goodman said.
