Fallsburg and Liberty go the distance in volleyball clash

LIBERTY – The playoff energy in the Liberty gymnasium was palpable Wednesday night as the Lady Comets visited to square off in a volleyball league matchup.

The division rivalry lived up to expectation as the two teams needed all five sets to decide a winner, and it was Liberty who edged out that win on their home court, three sets to Fallsburg’s two.

Early in the match, it seemed like Liberty was going to run away with the win. They won the first set 25-18 and then followed that up with a 25-15 win in the second set.

However, Fallsburg had no intention of going quietly, as they battled back in the third and fourth sets, winning 25-8 and 25-19 respectively.

The fifth set, played to 15 instead of 25, decided the winner of the night. After Liberty started with four quick points, Fallsburg called a timeout to settle down, which they did, battling back to an 8-8 tie in the deciding set. The two teams were in a stalemate, exchanging points until the end, when Liberty was able to win 15-12.

Fallsburg Coach Amy Johnson said, “This team has shown that they don’t quit. They play scrappy and they will throw themselves to the floor to save a point. We settled down once we got used to playing in the loud gym. We’re a young team with a lot of potential.”

Liberty’s Coach Elizabeth Hannold spoke of the team’s chemistry as they held on for the win. “Fans and players were supportive even when things got tough. If we continue working like this, we’ll have a successful rest of the season.”
