Fallsburg business engulfed in fire

FALLSBURG— Fallsburg Fire Chief Jordan Kozachuk said that the department was first alerted to a fire on Main Street in South Fallsburg on Friday, December 2 at around 5:44 pm.

The fire quickly turned into a multiple-alarm fire as smoke and flames engulfed Boosur Meat and Deli, located at 5215 Main Street in South Fallsburg.

According to Fallsburg Fire Department, the building was constructed in 1922, and it took over six hours before the fire departments were able to extinguish the blaze.

Kozachuk said people who have lived in the multi-use building had been displaced, and three firefighters suffered minor injuries in battling the flames.

The fire departments who assisted in the inferno were Woodridge, Monticello, Rock Hill, Hurleyville, Loch Sheldrake, Mountaindale, Grahamsville, Liberty, Summitville, Ellenville, Wurtsboro, Town of Bethel Fast, and BC-3.

County Legislator for District 8 and owner of Steingart Printing, Ira Steingart, said his building and office are next door to the deli and stated that his store suffered damage in the basement from the water used to battle the blaze and from the smoke.

Steingart said he was worried that the building would become more unstable when the fire rekindled the next night and understood it would be taken down soon.

Steingart added that the fire departments did a superb job in containing the fire to the one building and preventing it from spreading to the other buildings on Main Street.

While most of Steingart’s inventory is now gone, the machines they use in printing may have suffered smoke and water damage.

Steingart said he was glad that no one was seriously hurt.

“Everything else can be replaced,” he said.

This isn’t the first fire this year on Main Street in Fallsburg. Earlier this year, the building on the corner of Railroad Plaza and Main Street also burned and has since been demolished.

There has been no word on what caused the fire on Friday and it is currently under investigation.
