Fallsburg holds on to beat Liberty in rubber match

LIBERTY – The Lady Indians and Lady Comets have matched up well against each other all season. The two opened their seasons against each other in Ellenville. The non-league contest went to double overtime before Liberty was able to get the win. In the second chapter, Fallsburg defended their home court in their first division matchup of the year. The stage was set for their third and final game, this time in Liberty, on Thursday night.

A two point Liberty lead at the half was a clear indicator that both of these teams were locked in and ready, but Liberty’s shooting went cold in the second half and Fallsburg was able to keep their playoff hopes alive with a 27-21 win.

Fallsburg got off to a hot start, outscoring their opponents 7-4 in the first quarter, but the tides quickly turned as Liberty went on a 7-2 run in the second quarter for an 11-9 lead at the break.

Fallsburg opened up the second half scoring to tie the game at 11, then took a 13-11 lead before the two teams began exchanging the lead. Just like the first two matchups, neither team could break away with a large run, and by the end of the quarter, Fallsburg was able to take a 19-17 lead.

In the fourth quarter, Fallsburg’s defense locked down and gave their offense extra possessions as the Lady Comets were able to outscore the Lady Indians 8-4 in the final quarter to win 27-21.

Coach Pete Dworetsky showed an immense amount of pride in his team, despite the loss. “When we went into the locker room, I told them that I wish I had something to be mad at them for, but they did everything I asked today. I’m so proud of these girls and how they’ve grown all year.”

Coach Mike Ballard shared a similar sentiment about the Lady Comets. “Hats off to Liberty. They did a great job. I’m proud of the way our girls were able to keep their composure and close out the win.”

Fallsburg has one game remaining, a league matchup that will decide their sectional fate, on Wednesday night.
