FALLSBURG — State Police announced yesterday that a man has been charged in the strangulation death of a Fallsburg woman.

Around 1:45 p.m. on January 9, New York State Police from the Liberty barracks, along with officers from the Town of Fallsburg Police Department, responded to a residence on Loch Sheldrake Road in the town of Fallsburg for a report of a domestic incident.

Upon arrival, police found Marilyn Torres, 61, unconscious on the floor next to a bed and immediately began life saving measures.

Torres was ultimately pronounced deceased at 7 p.m. on January 11.

Based on their investigation, State Police allege that Joseph Detzauer, 37, physically assaulted Torres by strangulation causing her death.

Detzauer was arraigned on Thursday on a charge of Murder 2nd degree in front of Fallsburg Town Judge Robert Scheinman and remanded to Sullivan County Jail without bail.

Detzauer is next scheduled to reappear on January 25 at 5 p.m. in the Town of Fallsburg Court.
