BETHEL — Tragedy struck in the Town of Bethel on Monday morning when one person was killed in a head on collision on State Route 17B.

Members of the White Lake Fire Company, the Kauneonga Lake Fire Department and the Sullivan County Sheriffs Office responded to a report of a serious motor vehicle crash on Route 17B shortly after 9 a.m. on November 28.

According to the Sheriff’s Office, a 2020 Toyota RAV 4 SUV driven by Angela Theodoseau, 30, of Wappingers Falls, had crossed the double yellow line and into the path of a westbound Mack dump truck being driven by Michael Houghtaling, 60, of Lake Katrine.

The two vehicles collided head-on, resulting in the truck pushing the Toyota off of the westbound shoulder. Theodoseau was pronounced deceased at the scene by Sullivan County Coroner Alan Kesten.

Route 17B was shut down  for seven hours as firefighters went to work stabilizing both vehicles and law enforcement processed the scene. Also assisting at the scene were Bethel Constables, Mobile Medic EMS, the New York State Police Crash Reconstruction Unit and the Lake Huntington Fire Department.

The Livingston Manor Volunteer Ambulance Corps helped evaluate the truck driver to ensure they did not require medical treatment.

The exact cause of the crash remains under investigation.
