Firefighters assisting one of their own

Posted

WOODRIDGE –– Kevin McCombs, a local firefighter, was recently involved in a serious excavator accident. He is now in Helen Hayes Rehabilitation Hospital for a long stint.

McCombs is a past assistant chief and interior firefighter at the Woodridge Fire Department.
A poker run, sponsored by Red Knights, NY Chapter 39, took place on Sunday afternoon, beginning at the Woodbourne Firehouse and ending at the Woodridge Firehouse where a spaghetti and meatball dinner was held.

Proceeds from both events went to McCombs and his family for immediate expenses (travel costs, medical bills, etc.).“Kevin is one of the most hardworking, honest and humble person, I’ve come across,” said Woodridge FD First Assistant Chief Eric Akerley. “He’s a good soul and a gentle giant who always lent a helping hand to anyone in need.”

Akerley added that firefighters are part of a brotherhood and just like how they help their communities, they also lend a hand to their peers when they need it most.

If you’d like to make a donation to help McCombs in his recovery, you can mail it to: Woodridge Fire Department, PO Box 683, Woodridge, NY 12789.

In the memo box, write "Kevin McCombs." All donations received will go directly to the family to help.

A family friend has also set up a GoFundMe account. Donations can be made by going to www.gofundme.com/f/support-kevins-recovery.
