Flag Exchange honors all veterans

The semiannual tradition of the Town of Neversink Flag Exchange was a little different this year. The ceremony, usually held every Memorial Day and Veterans Day at the Grahamsville Rural Cemetery, was canceled this past May due to COVID-19.

But on Wednesday, despite the pandemic and the pouring rain, residents and friends in the town came together at 11 a.m. to retire the flag honoring Ted Connolly, a Navy veteran who served in Korea.

Members of Boy Scout Troop 97 lowered the flag and presented it to Connolly's family, then raised a flag to honor all veterans. It will fly through Memorial Day 2021.

Organized by Town of Neversink resident Geri Gorton, the ceremony included an invocation prayer and benediction by Deacon Carmine Salvemini of Immaculate Conception Church in Woodbourne, and a short speech by Purple Heart recipient James Richardson of Grahamsville.

Boy Scout Troop 97 was joined by members of Cub Scout Troop 87 and Girl Scout Troop 314. The observance concluded with the traditional playing of the 24-note bugle call known as “Taps.”
