Francis E. “Oscar” Porter, 86, of Long Eddy, NY, died of natural causes on Saturday, January 18, 2025 at Roscoe Nursing Home, Roscoe, NY. He was born on February 25, 1938 in Downsville, NY, the son of Faye and Shirley (Jensen) Porter. Oscar married Cheryl Mitterwager on December 14, 1963 in Jeffersonville, NY.

Oscar was a longtime resident of Long Eddy, graduate of  DVCS, served 2 years in the Army when he was honorably discharged. He was a member of the Local 17 Laborer’s Union for nearly 60 years.  He was a longtime member of the Long Eddy Fire District for 30 years, serving as fireman, Chief, and Commissioner. Oscar enjoyed bowling, baseball, and softball, serving as Coach for many years of the Long Eddy Softball team. He was also an avid reader, enjoyed crossword puzzles, hunting, ice fishing, snowmobiling as well adept at carpentry and special babysitter.

Surviving are his wife of 61 years, 4 children: Owen (Margaret) Porter, Melissa (Michael) Mirch, Beth Porter, and Jenni Porter; seven grandchildren: Jimmy (Annie) Porter, Christopher ( Brie) Porter, Jordan, Emily, Michaela Mirch, Porter Crawson, and Zachary Miller; one great-grandson Ryleigh Crawson; and many nieces and nephews. Oscar was the last living family member, third in line, predeceased by his 8 siblings: Evelyn, Pete, Ethel, Peggy, Ed, Charlie, Eugene, and Stanley.

A memorial service will be held on Saturday, January 25, 2025 at 3PM at the Henderson-Biedekapp Funeral Chapel, Hancock, NY. Pastor Shannon Bailey will officiate. A reception will follow at the Long Eddy Fire House, last call to 911 will be at 5PM. Burial will be a private affair at a later date.
