Generals reach 20-win mark before Region XV chip

LOCH SHELDRAKE – The Generals finished their regular season on Saturday after the BCANY Coaches vs Cancer Classic varsity contests.

The Montgomery College Raptors put up a fight, shooting at a higher percentage than they have all season and keeping the Generals on their toes for most of the game, but a strong second half propelled SUNY Sullivan to an 81-69 win, and a 20-7 overall record.

The No. 15 ranked team in the NJCAA was paced by Kipplyn Richvine, who scored 29 points, and Jay Alvarez, who had 23 in the win.

The Generals struck early and often, jumping out to a 26-14 lead after 12 minutes, but the Raptors hung in, slowly chipping away at the lead to trail by just three at the half. The Generals took a 39-36 lead into the break.

The Generals started the fourth quarter re-energized, quickly going on a 14-5 run in the first four minutes to increase their lead to 12. They never looked back.

Any time the Raptors would get their offense going and try to start a run, the Generals were quick to answer and keep the lead throughout the half. The closest Montgomery would get in the second half was six points.

“We struggled at times this season, so to get to twenty wins is amazing,” Generals coach Brent Wilson said after the game. “We had a few injuries that caused players to play out of position, but everyone stepped up and we were able to fight for a win today.”

Coach Wilson also credited the Raptors squad for their effort in the game.

“They’re a really good team. They shot better today than they do on average and it forced our team to really step up to get the win.”
